Set against the tumultuous times of the Eureka uprising in Ballaarat, 1854, the two find themselves victims of an abduction. To escape could mean death. To hope for rescue is not an option. Together they must find a way to survive in an untamed land where bushrangers, dense forest and wild animals are only some of the dangers they must face. Can he find the courage to succeed? Can she realise her dreams of freedom? Will the ordeal forge a bond of love between them, or drive them apart? And above all, will they find their way home? Tony (long lost brother to Penny from Ellenvale Gold), is working in the local store when he sees Estella for the first time. Riddled with self-doubt, he doesn’t imagine that a girl like that will ever have anything to do with him, even after they are thrown together when the women and children seek refuge from the violence building up at the miner’s camp and threatening the town. Unable to get her to conform, Estella’s father determines to send her to England to be presented at Court. Equally determined not to go, Stella cuts her hair, dresses as a boy and escapes, with the romantic notion of going to the stockade to see the excitement first hand, after overhearing the authorities plans to attack the miner’s barricade at dawn. What she sees there is almost more than she can handle. Faced by brutal reality, she runs away, eventually sneaking on board a cart and hiding underneath the canvas.
