Australian shipwrecks, Dutch explorers, Australian history, treasure hunting, shipwrecks, exploration, treasure hunting, mystery
In 1931, the children in the Edward's family discovered rare coins from 1655. After newspaper reports shared the discovery, many treasure hunters set out to look for the fortune. Mark Greenwood uses the story of this discovery to trace the history of the many Dutch shipwrecks from the 1600s. In 1656, a ship known as the Gilt Dragon was shipwrecked off the coast of Western Australia. 75 survivors reached the shores, and for ten days, they scavenged for food and water to survive. A lifeboat with seven crew members was sent back to Batavia (The Netherlands) for help. Between 1656 and 1658, five search ships were sent, but all rescue attempts failed. A fascinating collection of historical information that demonstrates how gathering information and piecing together clues can lead to the discovery of truth.
