Seventeen-year-old Eden is from the poor sector of Sendirian City. When a fire in their unit building displaces her family, they are moved to abandoned shacks with the rest of the survivors. It doesn’t take long for Eden’s abusive father to find them again. He forces Eden’s mother to give him money to fund his drinking habits. As they clean up from the aftermath of his attack, her mother begs Eden to get out of there, hopeful that her studies in the learning sector will get her a good job with accommodation. Eden is doubtful of this, but Eden’s brother, Jed, points out the vacant position in the government thanks to the recent abductions by crime boss Kore Luddan and his henchman, Izrod. Eden scores the position of junior keeper in the government sector due to the increased abductions targeting government employees. She quickly gains Head Keeper Susan’s praise for her hard work, and it isn’t long until she accrues enough overtime for some time off. Eden plans to use it to visit her family, but that night at her unit, Izrod attacks her. She wakes up in Kore’s lab, where she learns that her father sold her out for a few drinks. Kore injects her with a mysterious serum, and Eden passes out. When she wakes, a note is left in her cell, instructing her to try the door when the power goes out. Will Eden be able to escape? And how will the serum affect her? A captivating read about trust, betrayal, and deception in a dystopian world.
