Since his father left home, Jayden has lived in a small apartment with his mother and little sister, Madison. Although he is only in Grade Six, Jayden wakes up before 7am to prepare food for himself and his sister from the little in the fridge. Their mother lost her job at the supermarket and now seems to lie on the sofa bed all day. But there is a lot of washing and shopping to do. At school, Jayden's friend Dylan tells him he doesn't want to be his friend anymore. Instead, Dylan goes and hangs out with Luca, a boy Jayden does not like. Jayden is worried about what he has done to upset Dylan and worries about his mother. Miss Wilson is a new teacher who hopes to make a difference in her students' lives. Recently, her duties to prepare students for exams have been taken over, and she is questioning her role. The head teacher, Mrs Green, welcomes Miss Wilson and informs her that some of the children in the school can be tricky. She is assigned to Jayden's class and notices him seated by himself. After a comment from Luca, Miss Wilson decides to keep an eye on Jayden. During maths, Jayden is given worksheets to complete. Although he used to love math, he is stuck after the first few. When Miss Wilson comes over to assist him, he believes everyone thinks he is stupid. Will Miss Wilson be able to help Jayden?
