Jodie Ladan is a pastor’s daughter who dreams of going to NYU to become a journalist. Having grown up in a Bible College, she saw student families come and go and learned to guard her heart. Brandon is Jodie’s brother’s best friend. He has an apprenticeship with the local mechanic. Jodie bickers with him in an attempt to guard her heart, and Brandon sees her as judgmental of him and his past. He’s only recently discovered his mother lied to him for years, and his father is the local ‘Junk Man’, Luke McAffrey, whom his mother encouraged him to ridicule. Now, the local council is threatening to demolish Brandon’s father’s house. When Jodie's brother Josh becomes engaged, Jodie and Brandon are asked to organise the engagement party. Neither is keen, Jodie because she is getting ready to leave for NYU, where she has been offered a scholarship into journalism, and Brandon because his mother is dying of cancer. At the party, tensions boil over between the two and hurtful words are spoken. As he leaves, Brandon accidentally closes Jodie’s hand in his car door, causing serious injury. Brandon is devastated by what he’s done. Jodie is convicted by how she’s treated Brandon and also crushed because her injury means she won’t be able to go to NYU in time to accept the scholarship. Brandon then receives a call that his mother is dying. A sweet romance about overcoming negative first impressions and supporting one another through grief.
