    After breaking up with her boyfriend, Dan, Charlie Lamp has just moved to Adelaide for university. She is staying with her grandmother, Penny, who makes repeated strange remarks about being careful of the shadows and talks about the coming of the syneghasts. Eventually, the syneghasts attack Grandma Penny and she dies. Charlie finds that her grandmother has left her a legacy: an unusual watch, the Tempus Imperium. When a man who once knew Grandma Penny appears and saves her from a syneghast attack, Charlie is swept into a world of time travel run by the Temporal Sinistrum. She sets out to prevent world destruction and learns more about the Temporal Sinistrum than she expects.
