11-year-old Bruno Beck lived in East Prussia, Germany, in 1945. Nearing the end of World War Two, the Germans are being told to evacuate. British and American planes are bombing their homes. Bruno and his mother are leaving East Prussia to reach Kiel, a city near Denmark, and find Bruno's grandparents. On their way out of East Prussia, with a group of other Germans, a Russian plane attacks. Bruno's mother dies, and he is forced to leave her in the snow when Russian tanks start firing at them. Thankfully, Bruno escapes through a forest and meets a black dog who is just as scared as him. She is wearing a suicide vest, and Bruno bravely removes it for her. But with more and more soldiers attacking, will Bruno ever make it to Kiel? A confronting and moving story about the end of World War Two in Germany and the reality of being a war refugee.
