Fleur Lester is asked to be a bridesmaid at Clare Bateman’s wedding. Realising she would be partnered with Clare’s brother, she refuses. Dan has shown interest in her in the past, but Fleur survived her father’s sexual abuse and now battles with all male attention. When her father dies in jail, her brother Jonathan suggests she leave her waitressing job and move to her childhood home in Caldon, which has been left to her now she’s eighteen. Fleur decides it might be healing to have a fresh start. To her horror, Dan Bateman works in town and lives next door. When he’s called to fix Fleur’s washing machine, he teases her to get a reaction and receives a cold response. Dan is an impulsive tease and can’t help stirring Fleur, constantly trying to get her attention. He soon realises there is much more to her than meets the eye. He doesn’t trust local police officer Jasmine after he finds her sneaking around Fleur’s house out of uniform. After Fleur is bitten by a redback spider, a nurse who knew her as a child takes her home with her. Fleur shares her past with the family, and their love and acceptance lead Fleur toward healing. Fleur befriends a stray cat in her yard and connects with how past trauma has made the creature shy of love. She cries out to God for help when some drunk teens who mistakenly believe her father became a millionaire come into her yard and demand to see her money. Dan comes to her rescue and calls the police. Despite Dan’s teasing ways, Fleur finds herself drawn to him but fights her feelings out of fear.
