Walter Tull grew up in a children’s home and lived an extraordinary life. After being scouted for a British football team from the streets of London, Walter became the first black out-field player in professional football. Although he faced cruelty because of his race, he became a great star and was respected by many people. His career was cut short when the war began in 1914. Walter was one of the first to sign up as a private. He survived the Battle of the Somme and was praised by officers for his efforts. He then became the first black officer in the British army. Soon before the end of the war, Walter was shot in No Man’s Land. Although his men ran through bullets and shells to rescue him, they couldn’t save him. A moving account of Walter Tull’s life and the respect he earned from many.
