Flip Little, a descendent of the lightkeepers of Elston-Fright, believes it's his duty to help take care of his little coastal town. When he spots an unusual wind at work in the village, he takes off to warn his two ghost friends, Girl and Corpse, and to figure out what needs to be done. From there, things just get worse. The Poltergusts - the evil twisters he has observed - take Corpse's pet spider Simon and wreck all sorts of havoc around the town. But their main goal is to take Corpse with them, because her inner magic is wanted by a wicked witch far away. Together, Flip Little, Girl, and Corpse work to destroy the Poltergusts by finding the magical light that once kept Elston-Fright safe. They make unusual friends along the way and discover family secrets that will leave them all haunted. When they at last achieve victory, it is bittersweet for Corpse, who now knows her parents were once taken by the Poltergusts. She prepares to set out on a mission to find them.
