mental illness, paranoid and manic behaviour, being in denial, families, single parents, school friends, school bullies, polish food and traditions
Ten days before Christmas, Jake wakes to find his mother missing, but no one is taking her disappearance seriously. His grandmother is in the kitchen, asleep in a chair after working the night shift, and his older sister, Rose, is more upset about being late for school than their mother’s absence. Jake gets dressed and goes to school after writing a list of ten places his mother might have gone. He is determined to solve the mystery. His Dad lives nearby, so Jake stops to tell him that Mum is missing. He seems confused by this news but tells Jake not to worry. He reassures Jake that there will be a good reason that she isn't home. Jake begins to work through his list of places, but he's struggling to understand why he can’t get anyone to help him, not even his best friend, Lukas, who lives next door. After school, he discovers a note from his mother. It says she has to go away for a while, and their grandma will look after them. Jake finds this very unsatisfactory as he still doesn’t know where she is. Will Jake be able to solve the mystery?
