Product Description

A debut middle-grade fantasy adventure following a young giant who defies family expectations on a coming-of-age quest. Ash isn't the biggest giant living in Haven-Home. He's not even as big as his twin brother, Oak, who's on the path to taking over from their father as village chief one day. Unlike the warriors in his family, Ash wants to learn incantation- the magic of wood, stone, water and fire. Now that they're twelve, Ash and Oak must go on a trek to prove they're all grown up, and bring back something with which to defend Haven-Home from the wolves who threaten their lives. But when the reclusive Avalanche is chosen as Ash's mentor, could their quest for incantation endanger the village instead?

Ash is the youngest son of the village chieftain at Haven-Home. He and his older brother Oak are now of the age when they will be expected to undertake their Trek—a journey all twelve-year-old giants take, from which they will return as an adult or not return at all. The village expectation is that each young giant will bring home a valuable weapon with which to help defend and build up their village. Axes, spears, and shields are the weapons of choice, but Ash has set his heart on magic, even though he is the weakest and most timid of his peer group. Ash and his brother are each paired up with mentors before setting out on their Trek, and as fate would have it, Ash's mentor is an outcast called Avalanche. Ash's journey to learn incantation takes him through all manner of dangers, and at first, Ash is terrified and intimidated. But as Avalanche has told him, he discovers bravery takes many forms—and his village needs Ash's contribution more than they ever knew.
