Product Description

BEFORE THERE WERE PEOPLE, THERE WERE BEASTS . . . The island of Ramoa was once luscious and populated with mighty beasts. Now though, it is home to barren and tamed cities, where nature is locked out and trouble is brewing. When Kayla's beloved animal companion, a rare winged pangron, is stolen, she's determined to get him back. But to do so, she'll have to leave her city and journey into the wild and forbidden Beastlands. There, she meets Rustus, an exiled young warrior, and Alethea, a healer desperately seeking a cure for a mysterious disease. As their quests unite them, they'll adventure across the lands they know so little about, leading them to discoveries both great and terrifying. Not least that the beasts they've always been taught to fear might not be so terrifying after all... The first instalment in an epic new fantasy adventure series for readers of DRAGON REALM, FIREBORN and SKANDAR AND THE UNICORN THIEF.

Kayla is a Cadet of the Air Academy in Sophiatown. She is bonded with Faro, a winged beast called a Pangron. While out flying at night, Faro is taken aboard a strange ship and Kayla is left to drown in the ocean. Eventually, she washes up on the shore of a strange land. Meanwhile, Rustus Furi, a young teen from Ataria, is transitioning into adulthood through his rite of passage to become one of the Unscorched, a Warrior of the Atarian Army. Rustus feels he must prove to his father and brothers that he is worthy and courageous enough to join them as one of the Unscorched. Unfortunately, when Rustus is close to winning the final test, he hears the cries of his friend Hubert and goes to help him. However, this causes him to fail the test and exiles him into the Beastlands forever. Finally, Alethea, a young woman from Ataria, is training to become a healer. She has lived with her grandmother and siblings since her mother left to pursue her prophetic gift. Alethea was studying under her father, the original town’s healer. Unfortunately, he died from a mysterious disease called the Scourge, believed to have originated from the Webspinners. When Alethea’s grandmother reveals that she has contracted the disease, Alethea sets out on a quest to find the plant that could hold the answers to a cure. After individually being rescued by the Marquis, a mysterious man who collects and studies the animals who inhabit the Beastlands, all three of these unlikely friends’ journeys collide. A worthwhile read with fascinating characters and a gripping plot for adventure enthusiasts.
