Along with her vocal parrot, Cookie, 10-year-old Rani Ramgoolam dreams of being an investigative journalist. Rani and her family live in the fictitious English town of Camberford. Her adventurous grandma, Nani, is visiting from Mauritius. Shortly after Nani’s arrival, Rani’s parents leave for a 9-day holiday to France, feeling a little concerned about what mischief Rani and Nani might get up to. On their first day together alone, Rani and Nani visit the local art gallery. Unexpectedly, the gallery is hosting a special display of artworks by local artist, Lord Harrington, a wealthy bachelor who died recently. His final painting is a self-portrait that contains a clue. There is a puzzle to solve! After following the clues, Rani and Nani return to the art gallery where all is revealed.
