Venetia (Ven) is a feisty teenager who is faced with a heavy burden after being diagnosed with an unnamed medical condition, causing her to have chronic pain. She collapses when her dance group, PopSync, is about to make it onto a reality show and believes her life is over. Ven’s best friend Maddie is still trying to run PopSync but misses her and begs her to come back. Ven can’t feel good about sitting on the sidelines and pushes Maddie away with her snarky comments. All she wants is to get through each day and avoid the “popular” girl at school who bullies her. But Ven is determined, despite the way her body falls apart, to get good grades and do something. For a creative outlet, she joins a singing group. Although she starts out somewhat bossy, Ven learns that's not a good way to make friends. Ven also learns how to ask for help. The story reads with the authentic voice of someone who is frustrated with a body that can’t do what you hope and wants to live life with dreams.
