As part of a volunteer program with her school, Eleanor is helping out by reading to the elderly ladies at a nursing home. When the lady she is working with, Nance, tells her about a murder, Eleanor is curious to know if it is something real. Despite Nance telling her to keep it a secret, Eleanor recruits her friends to investigate. They research the case at a local library, where Eleanor meets a university student, Jem. Jem asks her on a date, and Eleanor agrees. Although Eleanor has been developing feelings for Troy, Troy is hanging out with another girl, so Eleanor figures she doesn't have a chance. Unfortunately, Jem and Eleanor's date goes poorly, and Jem does not get the hint. He proceeds to make her feel uncomfortable and pressured. To distract herself, Eleanor continues to explore Nance's mystery. Troy and Angus explore a house where they believe someone from Nance's family used to live. Despite the police's request that Eleanor doesn't get in the way, she again finds herself in the middle of a cold case and an open case for theft. With a slightly less intense plot than the first book, this is a fast-paced and fun murder mystery storyline for teens.
