    In 1904, in London, Dolly Shepherd longed to fly. While sitting on a tin garden shed, Dolly shares her dream with her brother, David. But their Aunt Mariam scolds Dolly for climbing up there. Mariam believes women shouldn't climb rooftops, play in bands or act in plays. Dolly's parents reassure them that Dolly and Mariam are similarly spirited. When she turns sixteen, Dolly goes to London to see Mr Sousa, a famous band leader from America. However, Dolly doesn't have a ticket. She sneaks in as a pretend waitress and overhears Samuel Cody, a performer, complaining that his wife isn't there to assist his performance. He'll have to cancel the show! Will Dolly be able to help?
